I get it.
You want your website to be perfect, right off the bat. The right tagline. Beautiful design. Excellent copy. Everything is a reflection of your biz, and you can’t bear the thought of launching an imperfect/unfinished site!
But, here’s the thing (and it took me years to come to grips with this too): Your business is constantly evolving! Even if you’re a few years into it, and you have a solid grip on exactly what your passion is, who your business serves, and WHY you do what you do, it’s still going to evolve.
And your website will evolve with it! Heck, you may even launch a totally different website, if your brand changes dramatically enough.
How do I know this?
Because I’ve been there! Yes, I was once a clueless “graphic designer”, who built her first site as a class project…then, after college, I used that site to showcase my portfolio & resume to potential employers.
This is what it looked like:
I gave it the cherry blossom treatment, not because it had anything to do with, well, anything, but just because I think cherry blossoms are beautiful, and thought they would make a great backdrop for my website (smart strategy, right? Not). These were the days before I had a blog, before I had an e-mail newsletter, and before I had a clue what I really wanted to do with my career.
When I made the decision to strike out on my own, I decided I wanted a business name. So the cherry blossom site went away, and I designed this site for my then-newly christened business, CreativeGem Designs:
Many iterations and countless changes later, I realized the CGD name just wasn’t cutting it, and that led to what you know me by now: Sweet Dreamz Design!
But even SDD didn’t start out the way it is now…instead it looked like this:
And then I wised up: I was irritated with my old “Ruthie” font not being bold + clear enough, wanted a more fitting logo, not to mention I wanted to replace the not-very-good photo of me with a pro headshot…so I gave it the current redesign (this last major update took place earlier this year, January 2013).
And true to form, I’m already beginning to contemplate a major redesign for some time in the first half of 2014…to reflect the current focus, purpose, and mission of Sweet Dreamz Design – which is becoming clearer and clearer to me with each passing month and year. ♥
So what’s the moral of this story?
Don’t worry too much about where your website starts out (or started out, or currently is at), especially if your business is new too. Because it WILL change, as your business evolves.
Just start somewhere, and as your biz grows and comes into its own, you can invest more time, money, and/or resources into making it a fantastic online hub in which to engage + delight your clients or customers!
