My #1 Tip for Getting More Out of Each Day

With work, family, friends, technology, activities, and all the other demands of our time, it’s easy to go through life on autopilot, just putting out fires and doing whatever tasks happen to land on our desk. But we don’t WANT to live like that, right? We want to prioritize, find balance, and follow our dreams! Personally, I’ve found this one particular method helps me do just that, and although you may have heard it before, it bears repeating:

Keep Your Big-Picture Goals in Mind

If you know where you want to go, and what you need to accomplish to get there, you can make much better choices in how you spend your time. This will help you to focus on the important things, and cut out the “fluff” that tends to eat up your time.

  1. Map out where you want to be in three months, six months, a year, or whenever. This can be not only work or business goals, but personal goals as well.
  2. Decide what tasks, projects, and priorities will help you get to your big-picture goals. You can make a list, put them in your calendar, or tell your iPhone to remind you — whatever type of documentation works for you.
  3. Include at least one or two goal-related tasks in your to-do list every day. The point here is to devote at least a little bit of time to your goals each and every day. For example, if your goal is to write a book, add “write for fifteen minutes” or “write three pages” to your daily task list, so every day you take another step towards completion.
  4. Pause a few times during the day to ask yourself “Is this activity helping me to reach my goal(s), or is it hurting me?” That way, if you’ve gotten off-track doing some mindless or unnecessary task, you can give yourself a wakeup call.

Follow these steps (a heaping dose of self-discipline may be required 😉 ), and you’ll find yourself doing a lot less “fluff”, and a lot more of the important activities that will help you get where you want to go.
