In honor of President’s Day, I’m offering this two-part series on how to be a more effective leader. Be sure to read Part 1: Vision if you haven’t already.
Part 2: Creativity
Lots of things can be made better by thinking outside the box, and leadership is no exception. Whether your followers are your customers, donors, admirers, or others, you can always find new and more effective methods of leading them. Here are a few suggestions:
- Planning: Brainstorm alternative ways to reach your objectives; you never know when a less-obvious path might be shorter, easier, or better.
- Attraction: Think of all the (perhaps unconventional) ways that you could attract and retain new followers. For instance, someone who sells gourmet sweets can always offer coupons for first-time customers, but he/she might fare ten times better by offering a free item with every order placed during a “happy hour” time window.
- Communication: Seek more effective ways to engage with your followers, based on what you know about their communication preferences. For example, they might be more enlightened by a one-hour podcast once a month than by a fifteen-minute video once a week.
- Productivity: Come up with more efficient ways to get things done. Maybe you get a lot of questions or feedback from your followers, and the long-standing system that you use to manage and respond to them is not as efficient as you need it to be. So scrap the old system and come up with a totally new system that works ten times better.
Can’t seem to get those creative juices flowing? I find that it helps to get away from technology, and go to a quiet place where I can think. Grab a pen or pencil and a pad of paper, and sit somewhere secluded, away from all your electronic gadgets. Think from different perspectives, inside the box, outside the box, underneath it and so forth, and then write down your ideas. The point here is to use creativity to discover new, different, and better ways to lead, that will benefit your followers and also you and/or your business.
