Business cards are without a doubt one of the most valuable items in an entrepreneur’s marketing toolbox. Chances are, you have a huge supply of them stashed in your supply closet or desk drawer. So how can you put them to work for you, beyond just carrying some in your pocket for networking opportunities? Try these ideas:
1. Every time you interact with customers, vendors, or partners, try to pass along your card. This can vary depending on your business type; for example, drop a card in their shopping bag, include a card with every order you ship, send a card with the invoice/receipt, and so on.
2. Scout out your most loyal clients, your repeat customers, and anyone else who is a raving fan of your business. Send them a stack of your cards, along with a note that encourages them to share the cards with people who would also enjoy or benefit from the product/service that you offer.
3. Leave stacks of cards in places that are relevant to your offering. For example, display some in your clients’ or partners’ businesses, put a stack in public spaces such as your local chamber of commerce, or leave some in places where you know your ideal customer will be (like if you’re a pet-sitter, leave your cards in a pet grooming salon). Of course, always ask permission from the owner or person in charge before displaying your cards in their establishment.
Think of your business cards as little messengers, carrying word of your business from person to interested person, and leading them back to you!
