Getting ready for Easter…

This week I’ve been working in my Etsy shop, creating new place mats for Easter (it’s coming up – April 24th). Here I will show you the process that went into creating the “Easter egg” place mat, followed by some great Easter items from other Etsy shop owners.

It began with some sketches, where the idea emerged to have a Happy Easter banner wrapped around a decorated egg. I loved the concept, but since the center of the place mat would likely be covered by a dinner plate, I needed the design to be more off-center. Thus came the idea to have a trio of decorated eggs, with the banner wrapping around the bottom as if it were cradling the eggs.

So, I created a black and white illustration on the computer, and then set out to color the eggs. At this point, I decided to put a cross on the center egg, and played with different patterns for the other two. I also added a pink haze behind the eggs.

Last, I filled in the banner with color and shadows, and touched up the egg colors a bit. I printed the placemat on 11″x17″ paper.
